Job Description
The Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Graphic Design tenure track to begin July 1, 2025.
The Department of Art, Art History & Design seeks an individual with strong experience in Graphic Design in the areas of design thinking, methodology, typography, and specialization in one of the areas: web, UI/UX, package design, animation, 3D modeling, environmental graphic design. The ideal candidate will have an excellent background in teaching and recent pedagogical advancements in the area. Experience in the latest theory and practice in the field is highly desirable, as is participation in organizations or conferences such as AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists). The individual will work closely with existing faculty to teach Graphic Design courses that support and connect interdisciplinary approaches, and the varied curriculum taught in the department, while bringing industry experience to the classroom.
The successful candidate must be able to maintain a 2/3 teaching load. 40% of the time spent will be dedicated to teaching, 40% dedicated to research & creative activities and 20% to service. The position will require interfacing with the director of the Graphic Design program to ensure course material is consistent and work with existing Graphic Design staff. Advising Graphic Design minors, majors, prospective, and transfer students is part of your teaching load, and this duty is split between existing Graphic Design staff. You will work with Graphic Design BFA students on their individual studies and internship courses. This position will help Graphic Design staff interface with local companies to maintain internship opportunities and to grow our roster of contacts for student employment. The individual also must participate in service to both the department and the university and continue pursuing creative activity/professional development.
Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Graphic Design
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- 2-3 years of teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate teaching assistantships
- 3 or more years of industry experience in the Graphic Design field
- Ability to teach Graphic Design courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels
- Active record of creative activity and client work
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized skillsets in web, UI/UX, 3D modeling & animation, package design, and EGD (environmental graphic design)
- Participation in organizations/conferences dealing in theory and pedagogy surrounding teaching Graphic Design courses and industry skillsets
- An understanding of graphic design digital software and processes, and how this may be applied within creative industry practices
- Membership to professional organizations directly related to the Graphic Design field

Grants-in-Aid

Department Information
The Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nevada, Reno, offers undergraduate (BFA, BA, minor) and graduate degree programs in a range of studio art emphases including Book Arts, Ceramics, Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. In addition to the labs in these areas, it has the digital Fabrication Lab, Black Rock Press, and multiple galleries. The department also offers bachelor's degrees in Art History and Graphic Design. The Department of Art, Art History & Design functions within the School of the Arts and the College of Liberal Arts, which provides a focused environment emphasizing critical perspectives and historical knowledge leading to an informed appreciation of the world's artistic potential. Additional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within the College of Liberal Arts include work with the John and Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art, the Museum Studies minor, the Gender, Race, and Identity (GRI) Department, and the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies.
