Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Art, Art History & Design announces a new full-time, tenured faculty position for an Associate Professor to begin the fall semester of 2025. This position leads the department's Book and Publication Arts curriculum and manages the Black Rock Press, a facility with an established and ambitious publication and outreach program. The position will also contribute to the teaching and research in Graphic Design by offering experience and insight into type design, typesetting, printing and book publication, with expertise that uses and integrates digital and analog processes.

Tenure-track faculty members in the department will maintain an active research agenda and typically have a 2-3 teaching load. The primary assignment encompasses research 40%, teaching 40% and service 20%. The successful candidate will help to advise undergraduate minors in Book Arts and contribute to the department's interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in Art and Graphic Design. The preferred candidate is someone who has a BFA or MFA in Graphic Design, and/or an extensive record of Graphic Design industry experience. Candidates must demonstrate a broad knowledge of book and publication arts, and demonstrate an eagerness to work within a small, dynamic department of scholars, artists, and designers.

The Department of Art, Art History and Design has approximately 300 majors across undergraduate and graduate programs of which nearly a third are Graphic Design majors. The position works as the head of Black Rock Press and supervises one Graduate teaching assistant and student workers to maintain its day-to-day operations.

The Associate Professor of Book Arts & Graphic Design will be based in Black Rock Press and oversee activities that include:
  • Teaching Book & Publication Arts
  • Design and production of books, broadsides, and printed ephemera
  • Oversee the Parley Project, including the Redfield book arts fellowship
  • Engage the community and help fundraise for the continuation and longevity of press activities, including the fellowship
  • Oversee the maintenance of Black Rock Press's facility and equipment, through the supervision and direction of GTAs, student workers and volunteers
  • Maintain and promote inventory, sales, and shipping of BRP publications


Any tasks carried out during off-contract days in the Black Rock Press will be by agreement with the chair and compensated either through overload pay or a 10th month stipend.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have an MFA, at least three years of teaching experience and an extensive and established record of research.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidate must have an MFA. The preferred candidates will have extensive experience working within a press environment, hold an BFA or MFA in Graphic Design and/or have experience working in publishing or the graphic design industry. The person will demonstrate knowledge of type design and typesetting across analog and digital processes. This experience would enable them to teach both introductory and advanced courses and have skills in the Adobe Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).

Compensation Grade

Associate Professor - Tenure-Track, B-contract, 9-month
